CONSONANCE 2010: PROGRESS REPORT 1
NEW HOTEL!
by "Dr. James" Robinson info@consonance.org

We have exciting news to report: Consonance has just signed a contract with our beautiful (and much more affordable) new hotel, the Hilton Newark/Fremont! Check this website's hotel page for links to the hotel web page and reservation information.

AFFORDABLE: Standard rooms are only $75/night (plus fees and taxes), available from Thursday before the con until Monday after the con. Rollaway beds cost only $10 per night. This is a substantial saving over the Crowne Plaza's room rates. Parking is free. Wireless Internet throughout the hotel is $9.95 for 24 hours' access.

CONVENIENT: The Hilton N/F is located to the West of I880 just off the Stevenson Blvd. exit. There is a free hotel shuttle to and from the San Jose Airport (which doesn't run on a schedule so must be arranged in advance), and to the Fremont BART station. A taxi from San Francisco International Airport costs $60. From Oakland International a taxi costs $45. From San Jose International a taxi costs $29; bus fare is $24, but the bus takes a *lot* longer.

There are numerous restaurants and a shopping center within very easy walking distance from the hotel. For those on a budget, selections include Chevy's, Carl's Jr., Togo's, Starbuck's, Chuck-E-Cheese's and Food 4 Less, as well as affordable Chinese, Korean, Indian, Italian and Middle Eastern restaurants. The nearby Nijo Castle is more pricey, but offers excellent Teppanaki, Sushi and traditional Japanese food.

The hotel itself houses an excellent restaurant and bar, Ginger's, which is open and serving from 6AM until midnight. The food is excellent, especially the breakfast buffet; but, like all hotel food, it is a bit on the expensive side.

ACCOMMODATING: I stayed for a night at the Hilton N/F, and was pleased to note that the front desk staff knew all about me and my special reservation and room rate, there was *no* chemical smell from cleaning agents in my room, the bed was unbelievably comfortable, and the air conditioning system in my room was *quiet*! I slept peacefully through the night, which I almost never do at hotels.

FRIENDLY: I was pleased to learn that our Hilton sales representative, Doug Sanfilippo, used to work for the Doubletree in San Jose. He and the O'Hallorans and I spent some time gossiping about the bygone days of BayCon and Further Confusion, and Doug assured us that a bunch of folks singing all night was no problem at all for him and the Hilton staff. Air walls and water will happen on schedule! Doors will be unlocked and locked on command! Weirdness will be welcomed! Our show will go on...
